Ditch plastic for paper bag.
For those who prefer a plastic-free lifestyle, this is good news to you. From the 1st of July, the Penang government is encouraging businesses within the state to stop providing plastic bags.
As such, those customers who forget to bring a shopping bag, won’t be able to get a plastic bag even if RM0.20 is paid, The Star reported today.
Penang Environment Committee chairman, Phee Boon Poh was quoted addressing “We do not want them to do it just because it is a policy. My office will prepare the posters for these operators to encourage consumers to voluntarily stop using plastic bags.”
This latest attempt is one of the branches of the state’s initiative towards going zero-plastic bag usage, which kick-started in July 2009 and has been gaining positive responses.
This new move from July onwards is predicted to affect customers who do shopping at supermarkets, pharmacies, convenience and department stores. Moreover, the Penang government has reportedly raised a jaw-dropping RM8.9 million in plastic bag fees since 2009 until this year March. Even impressive, the fund is channelled into social-economic programmes for low-income homes under its Agenda Ekonomi Saksama.
