The Festival of Lights has never been short of colours and celebrations, but it needs to be short of one thing – plastic.

Deepavali is a Hindu festival that epitomises the victory of light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. The interesting festival is celebrated by lighting clay lamps (deepams) outside homes and munching over snacks and sweets. Speaking of snacks and sweets, one definitely needs takeaway packaging for bring them home. Yes, plastics are widespread in terms of food packaging but we are consumers can reduce it for the betterment of the world.

Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has been actively encouraging people to reduce plastic usage and use eco friendly disposables. Previously our biodegradable disposable plates, lunch boxes and wooden cutlery were encouraged for Thaipusam.. This time, they are stressing the importance of reducing plastic with paper bag food packaging.

The best live example is to view the oceans and rivers these days. Plastic pollution is evident and it’s causing disruption for the ocean occupants such as turtles and fishes. Paper bags are not only eco friendly but they give an uplift outlook immediately. We do understand that smaller packings come in plastic but slowly but surely, plastic needs to be reduced. Today, our biodegradable disposable plates are rapidly replacing plastic plates and we foresee the same happening for paper bags.

Switch to paper bags, bio lunch boxes and bowls.

Moreover, Medan Renong Food Court and the surrounding food trucks have opted for paper cups and bags. When public become more aware of the benefits of going green, there is no going back. We truly appreciate the efforts of Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) for encouraging eco friendly products.
