Yes, you read that right Penangites.

Set your eyes for a takeaway paper bag. From the first day of 2021, most shops in Penang will request RM1 for each plastic bag.
The current price is RM0.20 and it sees RM0.80 increase as a step to reduce plastic waste in the state. Hold on, there’s more. Expect plastic bags from Thursdays to Sundays only, as the remaining days would be no plastic days respectively.
Therefore, from Mondays to Wednesdays, you are less likely to receive plastic bags from most shops, shopping malls and supermarkets. Plan ahead, people!
As per reports, City Councils collect the total fee. In March last year, the state announced that it collected approximately RM8.9million since the year 2009. This somewhat indicates that people are willing to pay RM0.20 for each plastic bag.
At a seminar, state Environment and Welfare Committee Chairman, Phee Boon Poh said, “This is important for us to reduce plastic waste in the state.”
In addition, the exco member hopes that teachers who were present in the seminar would emphasise to their students the importance of not using single-use plastics. As such, check out our paper straws as an alternative.
Bring your own non-woven shopping bags or opt for a takeaway paper bag to ensure a better shopping experience.

Apart from the takeaway paper bag, check out our range of biodegradable lunch boxes and biodegradable plates. These disposable food packaging would be an ideal fit for a wide range of dishes.
Remember to pair the takeaway paper bag and lunch box with wooden cutlery for a complete set.

Never forget the cutlery and paper straw
Do you think such step should be taken in other states as well?
